A mini documentary exploring the connection between land, legacy and community through the stories of Black farmers.
Produced, reported and edited by Simone Octavia Stephen.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

More than four years ago, I chose Hampton University without fully understanding how special that decision was. Now I do.

There is something about being a student at Hampton that hits differently when you realize the ground you walk on every day carries roots deeper than you can imagine. Hampton Roads is where it all began, and I am grateful I got to spend four years living within that legacy.

For my senior capstone, I spent a year following three Black farmers in Hampton Roads: Thelonious Cook of Edible Forest, Sharon Creekmore Moseley of Creekmore’s Place and Dee Hall Goodwin of Mermaid City Flowers.

Roots Reclaimed follows their stories as they tend the land, build community and reclaim a legacy rooted in the very soil beneath them.

Hampton gave me the people, the place and the purpose to tell this story.
